According to Mustahattin Can Selcuk, the Provincial Coordination Chairman of Chambers of Agriculture and President of the Isparta Chamber of Agriculture, the carnation growers in Isparta anticipate harvesting about 300 million stems this year from their carnation greenhouses in 200 hectares. Carnations are carefully after the harvest and exported to various countries, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
According to Mustahattin Can Selcuk, Isparta is ranked second in Turkey for carnation production after Antalya. There are a lot of growers who have their production fields both in Antalya and Isparta.Carnations are sold to buyer countries based on their color. The families in the area come to work in these greenhouses on a daily and continuous basis. The growers have just finished harvesting the carnations they planted in November and December. 90% of the harvest was completed by the end of June; the remaining carnations, which were planted in February and March, were harvested in July and August. We had a very productive season.
Mr. Selcuk also added that the floricultural sector provides a living to many people, not only to the workers in the greenhouses but to the fertilizer suppliers, wholesalers, and truck drivers. That's why to sustain and to improve flower production in the city carries importance for generating revenue for the city's economy.
