'Isparta is second in Turkey in carnation production'

Mehmet Tugrul, the Director of Agriculture and Forestry for Isparta Province, paid a visit to the greenhouses in Central Deregumu Village that grow cut flowers, specifically carnations. Tugrul listened to their concerns after learning about growing and harvesting carnations.

According to 2023 TUIK data, the city, which holds a significant position in the nation's carnation production, ranks second in Turkey with a production share of 18.75%, producing 171.2 stems over an area of 142.6 hectares.

November 15 is when planting begins in Isparta, and June 15 is when the first crop is harvested. Every 1,000 square meters is planted with 33,000 seedlings on average, and each 1,000 square meter yields 120,000 stems of carnations on average.

To capitalize on the supply shortage in the market and thereby maximize the growers' revenue per unit area, winter plantings are done in November and December, and then sold in June when cut flower production is at its lowest as the carnation production in Antalya comes to an end.

Due to the significant temperature difference between day and night in the city, carnations grown in a variety of colors are of a high caliber and possess desirable qualities in the marketplace. Because of this, the carnations from Isparta are in high demand and they are shipped to different countries in Europe, including the Netherlands, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, and Russia.
