Danziger's floral innovations shine in Ecuador

"It’s not just about innovation"

Roses that require less light, odorless limonium, and the new green novelty Unicorn. These are just a few examples of the innovations happening at Danziger's cut flower breeding department in Cayambe, Ecuador. Recently, the site, where selections are made, unveiled a new Showhouse, designed to showcase their varieties more effectively. The Showhouse was inaugurated with a celebratory open days event in March, and during the Expo Flor Ecuador week in October, it attracted numerous international visitors. "The showroom serves as a central hub for introducing new floral products and cultivating a richer understanding of the diverse offerings at hand," says Leyla Pinzon, CEO of Danziger Ecuador.

Large assortment
Danziger is currently conducting trials on nearly 500 different rose varieties at this location, which is located at an altitude of 2,800 meters above sea level. According to Pinzon, innovation is top priority and the market is demanding for new and improved varieties. "Danziger has become one of the worldwide leading cut flowers breeders. Over the years, we expanded our assortment and grew into different crops, with the Scabiosa Scoop® series, the Green Dragon®, Enchante and in the past two years started breeding roses." And in this new showroom in Ecuador, special attention is given to rose breeding too. "Here, we have a rose showroom, a rose breeding area, a rose genetic bank, and a hydroponic rose breeding area."

Novelties
A breeder is always looking to breed new varieties and improve the existing varieties. At their showroom and at the Expo Flor Ecuador they proudly presented some of their new introductions, like the Unicorn, odorless limoniuim Enchante, and new roses in their Senti Roses assortment with Senty intensity and French Kiss, according to Pinzon, two exceptional varieties, with unique colors highly prized in the market.

"Unicorn is a new variety for 2024 and a true novelty green showstopper. The shape is what makes this variety stand out and the reactions are very positive. Special about Limonium Peretzi is that it doesn't have an odor. On top of that has an excellent performance, long vase life, fits in bouquets and well in the floral chain. And regarding the roses, we are breeding different varieties and there are already some varieties in the pipeline that need less light."

More than a breeder
Danziger is more than just a breeding company, Pinzon emphasizes. "We don't solely focus on developing and introducing new varieties; we also provide comprehensive technical support directly on the farms and collaborate with growers on the commercial side, creating joint marketing campaigns. It's not only about innovation; profitability is equally important for everyone's success. We deeply value the relationships we've built with our growers and their customers."
