"When the Christmas tree is gone that space can be filled with a houseplant"

The plant trade is running steady find Jantine van den Berg and Joost Jansen of the two family businesses Plantanious and Persoon Potplanten. In between the various trade fairs, such as the Seasons Trade Fair and soon the Trade Fair at Royal FloraHolland, they are already slowly preparing for just after Christmas.

"Whereas many companies really look forward to Christmas, for us the time after Christmas is much more important. We naturally supply potted plants, especially the large varieties such as Strelizias and Monsteras. All garden centers, including Intratuin, have already done the big orders and from week 50 onwards, we will deliver. When the Christmas tree is gone that space can be filled with a houseplant plant. Besides, a garden center also wants to have green plants visible again after the Christmas period. It's another extra sales opportunity when people come to the garden center for Christmas bargains," she says.

Joost is also working towards the December-January period, he says. "At the moment, all-day trading is going well. The real COVID-19 years are over, and we are happy with the regular lines and established relationships we have built. At our nursery, we mainly have ficus, a small-leaved but strong houseplant. You notice the popularity of large-leaved houseplants, but the demand for ficus remains stable. At our nursery, we have mainly ficus in the coming period and later in spring we will supplement this with seasonal outdoor products."

Jantine continues, "The first few weeks of the new year will also be an important period for us. Demand always remains stable, but after week 8 you often see that the availability of plants decreases slightly, although demand is often high then. We have anticipated this well this year by setting up extra plants to meet demand. For us, there are no real peaks in terms of plants; there is demand for everything. Mondays and Tuesdays are the peak days and the plants are usually delivered to garden centers, but also to DIY stores in Germany. Our plants are also sent to exporters who export them abroad. So our plants go all over Europe!"
