Denis-Plants going peat-free after tests

Belgian young plant company Denis-Plants is taking the lead and is switching to peat-free substrate with their perennials from 2025. The omnipresent peat was an indispensable ingredient in the company's nursery for decades.

Peat improves water holding capacity, buffers acidity, and binds fertilizers so that they are available to the plant even when fertilizers are not applied. Denis-Plants weighed their options and took their time before they made the decision. The decision was preceded by a long period of extensive testing with growing substrates to ensure their continued quality.

"A movement to grow 'peat-free' has emerged in recent years. Peat is a natural product and is easy to mine, but the downside is that it takes centuries before a few millimeters of peat grows again. Denis-Plants has chosen to be an early adopter of peat-free growing in their industry and to get involved from the start", the company says.

Only Hakonechloa, as well as indoor plants, will be an exception for the time being, as these crops are currently still undergoing tests to make the transition to 100% peat-free.
