'Chinese young people show interest in Aroid plants'

Many people complain that flower prices have dropped a lot in the last two years, and that the selling quantity decreased. However, this is not the case for the tropical plant market which has been growing in the past three years. "The collecting Aroids has recently increased thanks to the houseplant boom and collectors interest in high-quality plants," says Tracy Li, a 28-year-old Aroid collector from Shanghai."

Tracy became familiar with exotic anthuriums in 2020, and then had a small nursery in Lingang District, Shanghai. The nursery covers only 1ha, and she only focuses on special tropical plant varieties. Like Tracy, many more young adults (especially men between 20-35 years old) do so since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Exotic anthuriums, variegated monstera, and platycerium wallichii hooks are very popular. Their price per leaf can reach 100,000 RMB because variegated plants are not easy to get, and the tissue culture technique is not used yet. Yet, dedicated collectors are willing to spend some money on high-quality products, and they like to do the breeding themselves.

Why does this happen? One reason could be that young people appreciate that plants can last longer than flowers.
