Study: The effects of chemicals on the longevity of Alstroemeria cut flowers

The present investigation entitled "Effect of vase chemicals at different concentrations on the longevity of Alstroemeria Cut flower" was carried out in the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, College of Horticulture, Mudigere during the years 2023-2024. The main objective of the investigation was to find out the effect of vase chemicals on the longevity of Alstroemeria cut flower on water uptake, Cumulative water uptake, Transpiration loss of water, Cumulative transpiration loss of water, Water balance, Fresh Weight, pH of vase solution, Vase life, Physiological loss in weight (PLW) was recorded during the vase life period of Alstroemeria.

The experiments were laid out in completely randomized design with 10 treatments (T1: Control, T2: 2% Sucrose + Citric acid 100 ppm, T3: 2% Sucrose + Aluminium sulphate 500 ppm, T4: 2% Sucrose + Benzyl adenine 50 ppm, T5: 4% Sucrose + Citric acid 100 ppm, T6: 4% Sucrose + Aluminium sulphate 500 ppm, T7: 4% Sucrose + Benzyl adenine 50 ppm, T8: 6% Sucrose + Citric acid 100 ppm, T9: 6% Sucrose + Aluminium sulphate 500 ppm, T10: 6% Sucrose + Benzyl adenine 50 ppm) replicated thrice.

Among the 10 treatments, pulsing with 6% Sucrose + Citric acid 100 ppm solution recorded the best results for almost all the parameter studied and resulted in higher vase life (9.00 days) with maximum flower fresh weight (39.81 g) and increased water uptake (5.18 g/day), cumulative water uptake (72.80 g/day), transpiration loss of water (5.32 g/cut flower), cumulative transpiration loss of water (80.44 g/cut flower), maintained vase solution pH of (3.09), water balance of (-0.13 g/cut flower) and physiological loss in weight (18.96 g) in 9th day of vase life period. It has been concluded that Alstroemeria flower with T8 prolongs the vase life compared to other treatments.
