On Wednesday 6 November, participants in the Horti Sustainable Packaging Initiative (HSPI) met during a meetup at the Trade Fair in Aalsmeer. Thirteen packaging suppliers and products have been joining forces through the HSPI for a year to promote sustainable packaging in the floriculture sector.
The HSPI is a pre-competitive collaboration between packaging suppliers and producers.
The participants are Paardekooper Horti, DecoWraps, Koen Pack, Chrysal International, JBB Packaging, FloraLife, Modiform, Desch, and Twinpack. This year, Royal FloraHolland, Anylabel, Multi Supplies, and Circular Plastics are also affiliated. Greenport Aalsmeer is the leader.
Together, these suppliers and producers aim to take big steps to make packaging in the floriculture sector more sustainable with practical solutions and tools. This year, the HSPI has focused on cooperation and drawing up a certificate package to demonstrate sustainability. Information material was developed for participants on material choices, focusing on (international) recycling opportunities, legislation, and future developments.
During this meetup, participants discussed the cooperation, the challenges that exist and the steps that have been and still need to be taken. According to Herold Dongelmans of Greenport Aalsmeer, the meeting was fruitful: "We all want to contribute to a sustainable future for floriculture. That means trusting each other and sharing knowledge. Only then will you get further together."
