Robbie Gieslink has been appointed the new R&D Manager at ABZ Seeds, a strawberry breeding company specializing in seed-propagated varieties. With over 20 years of experience in breeding and team leadership within the horticultural sector, he brings a wealth of expertise to the role.
"At my previous employer, Syngenta Flowers, I was passionate about breeding my crops and leading a team of breeders. This role allowed me to develop innovative solutions and respond to changing customer needs and climate challenges. Joining ABZ Seeds presents an exciting new challenge where I can fully apply my expertise as both a breeder and a team leader," says Robbie.
"Strawberry production is currently largely done with varieties from cuttings. With varieties from seed, there are several advantages for the partners in the production chain in terms of planning and logistics of starting material, such as uniformity and disease-free propagation." With decades of experience, ABZ Seeds is a forerunner in the development of seed-raised varieties. For instance, with the introduction of Elan, ABZ was the first on the market with a seed-propagated variety. "Currently, we are seeing growing interest in their varieties Soraya and Estavana, strong and perennial varieties for the fresh market."
"I look forward to working with my new colleagues at ABZ Seeds to develop high-quality strawberry varieties that meet the needs of growers and consumers worldwide," he concludes.
