Bergcamp takes the next efficiency step: Bergcamp 3.0

Martin Stolze recently implemented an efficient logistics system at Kwekerij Bergcamp, located in De Lier, Westland. This project highlights the proximity and local partnership between the two companies. The system consists of several components. Paul van Leeuwen, Martin Stolze: "The components work together in such a way that it significantly improves the efficiency and productivity of the nursery."

One of the core pieces of this system is the potting machine, the Stolze 3030 PRO. This machine was first installed at Bergcamp Nursery. Bergcamp itself played a role in its development. Thanks to their input and experience with this machine, Martin Stolze was able to deliver a product that meets the needs of modern horticulture. Paul: "The Stolze 3030 PRO stands for robustness, versatility, and high performance. The machine is tremendously quiet, everything is easily electronically adjustable, settings can be stored per pot size and the cooperation with a planting machine is really perfect. Since the first installation, 30 of these machines have already been delivered at Bergcamp."

The logistics system also includes around 1,000 meters of fixed conveyor belts. These are placed throughout the nursery and processing area. These belts facilitate various processes, such as potting, widening, and delivery. Of particular note is the implementation of a special extendable conveyor belt halfway through the nursery. This innovation was applied for the first time at Bergcamp. This extendable belt makes it easy to remove and replace, contributing to a more flexible and efficient work process.

Another important part of the system is the delivery buffer in the delivery area. Here, a fixed conveyor belt has been installed leading to a roller conveyor buffer, consisting of 16 roller conveyors, each 15.5 meters long. Mobile work tables have been placed on the infeed side of this buffer, allowing employees to fill trays as they choose and use the buffer efficiently.

Walter van den Berg of Bergcamp forms the third generation in this company, together with his brother Robert. Efficiency improvements are top of mind for them. In recent years, this has been their full focus, leading to a reduction of one-third in working hours. One of their guiding principles is, "If you walk, you do nothing." Walter explains, "The plants go to the people, not the other way around. This applies to both the trays and the sprung pots."

Before reaching that point, they did extensive research. What did they want? How did they want it? Walter and Robert visited many companies. And visualized the system. Walter sees it as a great advantage that the entire path is kept clear ; the facade belt runs above the path. He talks about the head, torso, and tail of the system. The head consists of the roller buffer lanes. The torso is the aorta of fixed gable conveyors and the tail is the new roll-out conveyor.

Moreover, space has already been reserved in the delivery area for a second buffer, for which the necessary preparations have already been made. Bergcamp is ready for growth. Ready for the future. Walter: "We talk about Bergcamp 3.0. And every other month we share with the team how far the process is progressing."

Recently, a new nursery was opened. Walter has thoroughly enjoyed it. Having been in construction for 2.5 years, this felt overwhelming. So much attention and compliments. Walter: "I couldn't get the smile off my face."
