"Thanks to the hexagonal design, 20% more pots fit on the same surface area"

"In the pot plant industry, efficiency is key to success." With the introduction of the Hexagon Pot, matching Hexagon collar, and the Hexagon Pot Robot Line, Bosman Van Zaal seeks to provide growers with a solution that elevates space optimization, reduces labor, and brings plant health to a whole new level.

"Thanks to the smart hexagonal design, 20% more pots can fit within the same area, resulting in more efficient use of space and 20% lower transport costs. Additionally, this supports more sustainable production with a 16% lower CO2 footprint."

This technology was made possible through a collaboration between Hazeu Orchids and Modiform, who jointly developed the concept of hexagonal pots and matching collars. Bosman Van Zaal later transformed this concept into a technical reality with a custom-built automation line for the Floricultura nursery.

Hexagon Pot Robot Line: precision and automation
The Hexagon Pot Robot Line from Bosman Van Zaal is specifically designed to automate the entire process, from potting to spacing. "This advanced line combines proven technology with the latest innovations in sensors and robotics. Pots are positioned with exceptional accuracy, resulting in maximum space utilization and optimal plant growth. Automation not only boosts productivity but also enhances precision and consistency in the cultivation process."

Two phases of the pot robot line
Phase One: Potting and Initial Placement
Potting is carried out using an integrated third-party robot, followed by the precise placement of pots. Bosman Van Zaal aims to enhance its robotics technology with a specially developed gripper for hexagonal pots. "This gripper utilizes air-driven suction cups that position pots without air gaps, something traditional grippers cannot achieve. These suction cups provide a secure grip, to minimize the risk of plant damage, and enable the formation of efficient rows."

Phase Two: Spacing the Plants
After several months, the plants are spaced out. Since the roots of Phalaenopsis plants often intertwine during cultivation, the pots are manually removed from the growth table and placed into special cups. These cups, equipped with an automatically fitted collar, stabilize the pots during transport. On the spacing line, the pots are precisely positioned via the collar, and a special fork places them back into the growth table. The cups are reused, ensuring an efficient and continuous process, as stated by Bosman Van Zaal.

Future-oriented solution
With Hexagon technology, Bosman Van Zaal seeks to offer nurseries a forward-thinking solution to operate more efficiently and sustainably. "The successful implementation demonstrates that innovation and collaboration lead to impressive results, including space savings, cost reductions, and increased output."
