The Khuzhamov family from Andijan, Uzbekistan has been cultivating roses for nearly 15 years. On their 10-hectare farm, they grow over 500 varieties of roses and they also export seedlings.
In 2010, inspired by successful classmates, the family started their flower business. It began with sourcing roses from local farms but they soon shifted to growing their own. Discarded roots from early exports were replanted, leading to the development of unique varieties. By 2015, they expanded their operations after securing additional land, achieving $100,000 in sales that year.
The Khuzhamovs faced challenges such as competing with imported Serbian roses. They innovated by using wild rose rootstocks from Russia, which enhanced the strength of their roses. This technique involved carefully cultivating rootstocks for nine months before grafting the rose cuttings, ensuring high-quality plants with robust stems and roots.
Now leaders in the Russian market, the family grows roses that meet international standards. Their collection has grown from 100 varieties in 2015 to over 500, including varieties from the Netherlands, Serbia, and Africa. The nursery replaces 20,000–30,000 plants annually with experimental varieties to meet evolving market demands.
The roses are naturally resistant to most diseases, requiring only protection from aphids and spider mites. Regular inspections by quarantine agencies ensure plant health. The farm employs over 70 specialists, with the workforce doubling during peak seasons.
The Khuzhamovs export seedlings to Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, with annual production reaching one million. Sales in 2023–2024 exceeded $550,000, with plans to expand further. Future goals include producing rose oil, syrups, and jams for the food and perfume industries.
Despite the challenges, the Khuzhamovs find joy in their work. "We aim to bring happiness through the beauty of flowers," says Botirjon Khuzhamov. Their dedication to innovation and quality continues to make their roses a symbol of Andijan's blossoming success.
