8th National Ornamental Plants Congress goes ahead in Turkey

Highlighting the role of ornamental plants in enhancing environmental quality and driving economic growth, Leonardo Capitanio, President of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), took center stage at the 8th National Ornamental Plants Congress in Ankara, Türkiye.

The congress, held from 14 to 17 October at the Litai Hotel and organized by Professor Dr Soner Kazaz from Ankara University's Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, attracted over 600 participants. Researchers, private sector leaders, and municipal representatives gathered to showcase the growing enthusiasm for the ornamental plant industry across Türkiye.

In his opening speech, 'Why Does the World Need Ornamental Plants?' Mr Capitanio emphasized the importance of ornamental plants in enhancing environmental quality, promoting mental well-being, and boosting economic growth. According to the AIPH, his speech resonated with a diverse audience, highlighting the critical role of ornamental horticulture globally.

Several organizations supported the congress, including AIPH members, such as the Central Anatolian Ornamental Plants and Products Exporter and the Turkish Flower Group. "Both play a significant role in promoting the ornamental horticulture sector in Türkiye and abroad. These partnerships underscore AIPH's strong ties with the Turkish ornamental plant industry and its continued efforts to foster global collaboration."

The event also showcased the contributions of researchers from 50 universities, 12 chamber associations, 30 private sector companies, and six city municipalities. Afternoon sessions featured discussions on 'Green Cities in the 2nd Century of the Republic', with urban greening projects from cities like İzmir, Gaziantep, Antalya, Ankara, and Istanbul. These sessions highlighted the efforts of Turkish cities to incorporate green infrastructure and sustainability into urban planning, aligning with AIPH's broader mission of promoting greener, healthier cities worldwide.

Mr Capitanio praised the organization of the event, which was led by Dr Soner Kazaz, a "prominent figure" in cut flower cultivation with over a million Instagram followers and a global influence.

The 8th National Ornamental Plants Congress showcased the progress and dynamism of Türkiye's ornamental horticultural industry, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration. AIPH was honored to participate as a guest speaker, with Mr Capitanio praising the event for its organization and the industry's continued growth. The congress highlighted the country's strong commitment to advancing ornamental plant production and its potential for future global collaboration.
