Making advancements in tulip production

Tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.), one of the most iconic bulbous ornamental plants, holds significant importance in the global floriculture industry due to its vibrant flowers and diverse applications in landscaping, cut flower production, and potted plant markets.

Representing the largest ornamental geophyte crop globally, tulips thrive primarily in temperate regions, with Holland leading their commercial production. This chapter delves into advancements in tulip production technologies, focusing on key aspects such as botanical classification, environmental and soil requirements, propagation methods, and the role of pre-cooled bulbs in extending cultivation to subtropical regions. It also highlights planting techniques, irrigation, nutrient management, and pest and disease control measures critical for optimizing yield and quality. Challenges such as climatic adaptability and physiological disorders are addressed, alongside future prospects in crop improvement through biotechnological innovations and sustainable practices.
