Floriculture in Assam holds significant potential, yet research in the Kamrup Metro region, particularly in Sonapur, remains limited. This study addresses the research gap by examining the socioeconomic aspects, operational functioning, and profitability of floricultural businesses in Guwahati, Sonapur, and Azara.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 100 samples through surveys, interviews, and structured questionnaires administered to nursery owners and florists. Key findings reveal that Sonapur has the highest potential for floricultural growth due to its fertile soil, favorable climatic conditions, and efficient logistics. The study identifies orchids and marigolds as the most profitable floral plants, with benefit-cost ratios of 1.8 and 1.6, respectively, highlighting their financial sustainability. Despite these opportunities, challenges such as inadequate cold storage facilities and high transportation costs persist, particularly for marginalized farmers. The research underscores the role of education, religious practices, and employment generation in driving the industry's growth. By exploring these dimensions, the study concludes that floriculture in Kamrup Metro can significantly contribute to economic sustainability and job creation while encouraging policy interventions for infrastructural improvements.
This study provides a foundation for further research and highlights the importance of floriculture as a key component of horticultural practices in Assam.
