Shell stops geothermal projects in the Netherlands: 'We don't see enough perspective'

Shell has decided to scale down its role in geothermal projects in the Netherlands. "Although we expect that geothermal energy can play an important role in the Dutch heat transition in the longer term, Shell does not currently see sufficient perspective to scale up its geothermal activities," a spokesperson revealed in response to questions.

"We will therefore enter into discussions with our partners in the various projects in the coming period to ensure a smooth transition. In doing so, we are looking for appropriate solutions for the individual projects and permits."

Shell has been active in the field of geothermal heat in the Netherlands for about six years and is involved in projects in Delft, the Westland, Leeuwarden, Rijnland, and the Rotterdam-Rijnmond area.

"In many places, a collective heat network with a geothermal heat source can be a solution to provide both sustainable and affordable energy," the spokesperson said. "Shell is therefore pleased with the years of good cooperation in the field of geothermal energy, with project partners, governments and other stakeholders alike. Shell remains committed to delivering the energy of today and tomorrow, with more value at fewer emissions. This is where we are constantly adapting our portfolio."

In February 2025, Shell decided to wind down its role in geothermal projects in the Netherlands. Soon afterwards, the Geothermal Rhineland announced it was looking for a replacement for Shell.
