"Conifers are making a comeback"

Many people still think of hedge conifers when they think of conifers. In that, they certainly still have their value, thinks Liesbeth van Woudenberg of Bremmer Boomkwekerijen. "But so many more applications are possible with conifers."

Comeback
She talks enthusiastically during Plantarium|Groen-Direkt about the conifers on display in all sorts of colors, shapes and sizes.

"Conifers may have become less popular over the years, but we like to show that they are making a comeback. Where you used to see them mostly planted in a garden, we show them here in pots," Liesbeth says. "This way, they can also be placed on a terrace or balcony and look totally hip."

Michael Perry - known as Mr Plant Geek - also has an eye for conifers. As a trend watcher and well-known plant expert, he too thinks conifers are making a comeback.

Variety

Besides well-known species of conifers such as Thuja and Taxus, they also showcase unusual species such as Cryptomeria and Araucaria at Bremmer Boomkwekerijen's stand.

"There is so much variety in conifers: from well-known dark green species to special shapes in other shades. Besides, conifers add color to the garden in winter. They are favorite hiding places for birds and small mammals such as hedgehogs."

Cryptomeria (Japanese crescents) is a group in increasing demand because of its unusual shapes. Han crests, twisted branch structures or whimsical growth forms are popular, says Liesbeth. "Because of climate change, moderate winter hardiness is no longer an issue. In addition, in autumn and towards the Christmas period, we see that interest in Europe has increased considerably. Think of the species Juniperus chin. Stricta, Cedrus and the Cryptomeria jap. Elegans Viridis.

Sales
Sales at Plantarium|Groen-Direkt were above expectations, says Liesbeth. Expectations for sales this year are also positive. "Now we hope to see more and more conifers on the shop floor, also in pots. The more consumers are introduced to the idea of other uses for conifers, the better."
