Campaign launched to promote sustainability in Indian floriculture

Growers' Flower Council of India (GFCI) and India Florist Association (IFA) are joining the environment group "Beautiful Bharat" to create awareness of simple steps that can reduce the waste and emissions from flowers.

"It is estimated that the added carbon footprint just on Valentine's Day alone is 9 million kgs. Some of this maybe unavoidable but the GFCI and IFA believe that they can surely minimize the impact with a little care." As a result, the two groups are launching a series of posters to bring awareness to the issue.

Significant among the issues is the improper disposal of rotting flowers with plastic wraps.

GFCI and IFA believe that the vendors putting out flowers can indeed play a role in creating awareness on proper disposal, as part of the extended responsibility in the true spirit of EPR - and Beautiful Bharat's unique bouquet tag gives growers the chance to put these disposal instructions in the hands of not just the customer, but the recipient of the flowers. This input is placed right on the back of the bouquet tag, which can also later serve as a bookmark and keepsake for special occasions.
