Valentine’s season in Colombia: "The weather was on our side"

The Valentine's Day season for Colombian flower exports proceeded without major disruptions, according to Genoveva Pombo, Director of Marketing and Communications at Asocolflores. "The weather was on our side, and the Flowers of Colombia were delivered to customers in different countries with the expected quality and efficiency."

Seasonal labor demand followed the usual pattern, with additional employment generated in production areas. "Approximately 20,000 additional formal jobs were created, impacting communities where floriculture is present in Colombia."

On the logistics side, Genoveva attributes operational stability to the Petalo Plan, implemented in 2006. "We ensured the transport of Colombian flowers, maintained cargo flow, and prevented illicit activities. Coordination with authorities—including ICA (Colombian Agricultural Institute), the National Police, DIAN (National Directorate of Taxes and Customs), and Supertransporte (Transport Superintendence)—alongside logistics chain agents such as airports, port authorities, cargo agencies, and airlines, was effective."

She emphasizes that timely delivery remains a key challenge for flower exporters. "Providing flowers in time while meeting phytosanitary requirements, security protocols, and logistical demands from destination countries is always a priority."

Looking at export volumes, Genoveva notes expectations for growth. "Every year, we anticipate an increase compared to the previous season. With Valentine's Day falling on a Friday, we expect higher sales for Colombian flowers. Favorable conditions allowed for timely deliveries, and we hope that retailers have received their shipments as planned."
