Green Label Greenhouse certification made comeback in 2024

After a temporary decline in 2023, the use of the Dutch Green Label Greenhouse (Groen Label Kas/GLK) certificate increased sharply again in 2024. With 46 certificates granted and a total area of 227 hectares, the certification level is back to the level of 2021.

Growth spurt after uncertain period
The turbulent energy market of 2022 caused many companies to postpone investments. This effect was still felt in 2023, but as the market stabilized, companies resumed their construction and renovation plans in 2024. The result: a doubling of the certified area compared to 2023.

Facts and figures
The Green Label Greenhouse scheme remained unchanged in 2024. The number of certified projects rose to 46, with a total area of 227 hectares - more than twice as many as the previous year.

Use of the Green Projects Scheme remained limited. Only three projects (7%) made use of this scheme through the certificate. The distribution between vegetable and ornamental cultivation projects was almost the same, but the vegetable cultivation projects, with an average of 6.9 hectares, were significantly larger than the ornamental cultivation projects (average 2.8 hectares). In particular, the certification of 12 tulip cultivation projects, with an average area of 2.2 hectares, affected this ratio. With nine different crops, ornamental cultivation had a greater variety than vegetable cultivation, in which six crops were certified.

Looking ahead to 2025
To further support the sector, the 16th version of the GLK certification scheme was introduced in 2025. This revision responds to the latest developments within sustainable greenhouse horticulture and provides companies with additional tools to make environmentally friendly investments.
