Geothermal power Maasdijk officially put into operation

On 1 March, the first doublet of Aardwarmte Maasdijk was officially put into operation, marking the first part of the Westland Heat Network. With the commissioning of the doublet (the wells for extracting geothermal heat), 26 glasshouse horticultural companies are now provided with sustainable heat. This involves a total area of 134 hectares.

500 hectares of greenhouses
The geothermal heat project in Maaswijk consists of three geothermal doublets, the first of which has now officially been put into operation. Ultimately, this heat system will provide heat to around 500 hectares of greenhouse land. In doing so, the project will make a significant contribution to making the region's energy consumption more sustainable.

Trading platform also live
On 1 March, not only the heat source in Maasdijk and the first part of Warmtenetwerk Westland went live. It was also the moment when the Trading Platform went live. This very first trading platform enables greenhouse horticulture companies to exchange heat supply and demand among themselves. Thanks to this innovation, companies can trade heat efficiently, ensuring even more sustainable use of the energy generated.

What is a doublet?
A geothermal doublet consists of two wells. The first well pumps up hot water of around 90℃ from deep underground and delivers this heat via a heat exchanger to the Warmtenetwerk Westland network. Through this pipeline network (there are now 22 kilometers), the heat is delivered to the connected greenhouse farms. The cooled water is then fed back into the ground via the second well.
