West Godavari District Collector Chadalawada Nagarani participated as the chief guest in a training program for farmers on floriculture and horticulture value-added products organized by the Horticulture Department on Wednesday. She visited the flower exhibition and inquired about its details.
Speaking on the occasion, she encouraged farmers to focus on cultivating flowers, which can yield higher profits. She noted that, along with Singapore and Malaysia, Hyderabad, Rayalaseema, and Kadiyam in the two Telugu states are renowned for flower cultivation, with farmers there earning substantial profits. She emphasized the need to identify areas with high water reserves in the district and focus on Phool Makan cultivation. Additionally, vegetables are being cultivated in the Penugonda and Siddhantam areas of the district.
Areas suitable for flower cultivation in the district should be identified, and farmers should be educated and encouraged to pursue this opportunity. Although flower cultivation requires a bit more initial investment, it can yield higher income if the flowers are harvested successfully. Term loans are available as an investment for flower cultivation, with repayment due after five years.
In addition to loans from NABARD and DRDA, NRGS provides opportunities for jasmine garden cultivation. There is a demand for decorative flowers both in India and abroad. Successful orchid cultivation is already taking place over five acres in Kapavaram, with flowers priced between Rs 30 and Rs 150 or more. Flower cultivation can start on as little as 10 cents and expand to one acre.
