Aside from Yunnan province, Zhangzhou in Fujian province is another key plant production hub in China, with exports continuing to rise. According to official data, the export value of flowers and seedlings from Zhangzhou surpassed 100 million U.S. dollars in 2024. Below, a chrysanthemum grower from Zhangzhou shares his story.
Liu Feng began growing cut flowers in 2012 in Zhangzhou. Initially, he grew cut roses. By chance, he discovered that chrysanthemums have a very promising overseas market. Since 2014, he has been growing cut chrysanthemums and now grows them on over 4ha, selling flowers to Japan, Korea, Russia, and other countries via sea and land transportation. It takes only 3 days for his flowers to reach Japan from his farm.
Chrysanthemums can be grown in two seasons a year. Summer chrysanthemums are cultivated from March to May, and fall chrysanthemums are grown from November to February. During the peak period, there are up to 50 workers on Liu Feng's farm every day to harvest the plants.
Chrysanthemums are popular in Japan, especially for ritual festivals, and they command a higher price. However, the Japanese market has strict quality standards for chrysanthemums, with specific requirements for flower heads, as well as the length and width of stems. For example, for A grade, the stem length should exceed 90 cm. To improve flower quality, he invested in a greenhouse facility. With better climate control, the A-grade rate of fresh-cut chrysanthemums increased from 45% to 78%, and yield also increased, allowing him to produce 100,000 flowers per year.
