According to Theo de Mooij from Hoven & de Mooij, trade is a bit slower at the moment, but there's no reason to complain. With a strong peak around International Women's Day and Valentine's Day, the first quarter of this year has been busier for the wholesaler compared to last year. Theo is also looking ahead to the coming weeks with optimism.
Strong prices
"Last week, there was a slight dip in the rose supply because a lot was cut for Valentine's Day, leading to six weeks of lower production. For trade, this results in strong prices," Theo explains. "Tulips have especially become very expensive due to a shortage of bulbs, and their prices are high. Retailers are now turning to other products. For instance, the side shoots of freesias are being bought by retailers, leaving the main stems behind. These are receiving very high prices at the auction."
Shifts in demand
The price increases don't necessarily mean less is being purchased; instead, demand is shifting. "Some customers have mentioned that they can't ask consumers for those prices, but I don't see a drop in sales. We sold a lot of flowers for International Women's Day – which is becoming more global every year. On the day itself, we were even called to ask if we were open because flowers were urgently needed," he says with a laugh. "And fortunately, people are still willing to spend on their bouquet."
Growth in imports
The busier first quarter compared to last year can also be attributed, in part, to the growth in imports for Hoven & de Mooij. Their assortment, sourced from countries like Colombia and Ecuador, is gradually transitioning to summer colors. "We're now saying goodbye to orange and red, with shades of pink, cream, white, and pastels taking their place. This helps ensure our assortment is ready for the summer season, with the upcoming English, Dutch, and French Mother's Days, as well as Easter."
Theo remains optimistic about the weeks ahead: "The first Dutch hydrangeas are coming in, and these are products we sell a lot of. It's always exciting."
