China: 73 tons of imported seedlings for first two months of 2025

Yunnan, with its unique climatic and geographical conditions, is ideal for cut-flower cultivation and has become a major supplier to the global fresh-cut flower market. Last week, 30,000 imported flower bulbs and seedlings—including Begonia × hiemalis Fotsch, Echinacea purpurea, and Gloriosa species from Germany, Turkey, the Netherlands, and other countries—arrived at Kunming Airport Port.

According to statistics, during the first two months of 2025, Kunming Airport Port processed 73 tons of flower bulbs and seedlings, valued at 11.32 million RMB, representing year-on-year increases of 73.8% in volume and 34% in value.

"With the cultivation season approaching, demand for imported flower seedlings has surged," said Tian Xiangfeng, General Manager of Yunnan Shenghang International Trading Co., Ltd. He emphasized that these seedlings require strict temperature, humidity, and light controls during transportation, as transit time directly impacts their quality and survival rate.

To streamline customs clearance, Kunming Airport Port now offers 24-hour customs services, significantly benefiting perishable young plants. Additionally, imported seedlings undergo rapid checks for potential epidemics or harmful organisms. For instance, a recent batch of Anthurium andraeanum was found carrying quarantine pests; Kunming Airport Customs immediately notified Dianzhong Customs of the results, and the affected plants were destroyed.
