"With English Mother's Day just around the corner (March 30), it's mostly pink and red flowers coming through", says Wesley van Klaveren, of FlowerGreens, a Dutch im- and exporter at the auction in Rijnsburg, the Netherlands.

Very Expensive
"We import a lot from South Africa, and currently, many Protea varieties, Nutans, and other varieties are coming in. The Grevillea Ivanhoe is particularly popular. It's naturally very beautiful but is also widely used for dyeing, for example in pink shades. Additionally, Erica is also doing well. These are currently the bestsellers for Mother's Day in the business," he explains. "We're also doing a lot of freesias, which are supplied by the best growers in the Netherlands. We have both double and single stems to mix. Freesias were extremely expensive for Valentine's Day, up to €0.60 to €0.80 per stem. Now, the price is between €0.35 to about €0.50 per stem."
"We were well-stocked with varieties like magnolias from the Netherlands and France, and Italian plums. This is now coming to an end, as the season of these varieties is almost finished."
English Mother's Day
For the English people, Mother's Day is a big hit when it comes to flower purchases, especially since prices are significantly lower than those for Valentine's Day. In some cases, prices have even dropped by up to 100%. It seems like it should be a bit easier than Valentine's Day," he laughs. Meanwhile, business at FlowerGreens is quieter. While prices remain steady, profit margins are sometimes a bit tighter due to factors like transport costs, demand, and supply.
"We've certainly been kept busy with our move within the auction," Wesley adds. FlowerGreens has now relocated to the heart of the auction at Rijnsburg, to location G4-01, and they're in the final stages of setting up their new space.
