HOKO Breeding unveils a variety that displays a subtle, natural glow-in-the-dark effect. The phenomenon was discovered during a routine selection round in the greenhouse and has since been confirmed by scientific research. The effect is entirely natural and results from a unique combination of pigments and cell structures.
A natural glow without additives
"We had the plants from this selection examined by experts and discovered that the cells in the flowers absorb light during the day and gradually release it at night," explains Wouter den Hollander, co-owner of HOKO Breeding. "A unique and completely natural process—without any artificial additives."

Scientifically confirmed
The discovery has now been examined by Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Their analysis shows that the effect is linked to a specific combination of pigments and cell structures. So far, it has only been observed in one cross within HOKO Breeding's breeding selections. This cross shows clear genetic similarities to the well-known Magical Hydrangea series. The color-shifting character of this line may play a role in the luminescent process.
"Exciting and groundbreaking"
"This is a groundbreaking discovery," says Matthieu Eveleens, co-owner of HOKO Breeding. "It adds a whole new dimension to ornamental plants and opens exciting commercial opportunities for growers and retailers."

The discovery presents both commercial and ecological opportunities for home gardeners as well as landscape designers. Think of natural ambient lighting in gardens, energy-efficient landscapes, and even a step toward bioluminescent ornamental plants.
"We are still in the early stages of this research, but the idea of a garden that subtly lights up at night without electricity is incredibly exciting," adds Wouter den Hollander.
Premier at FlowerTrials 2025
The glow-in-the-dark hydrangea will be presented live for the first time during FlowerTrials 2025, from June 10 to 13. Visitors to the HOKO showcase at Kolster BV will have an exclusive chance to experience this phenomenon firsthand. HOKO Breeding's newest varieties will also be on display.
