"Hypericum is a crop that requires patience, but the results are worth it"

In Naivasha, Kenya, where the fertile soil and mild climate provide ideal growing conditions, lies Benev Flora. This nursery, founded by agronomist John Ndung'u, is located at an altitude of 2,200 meters and specializes in growing Hypericum. What once started as a curiosity about flowers grew into a 20-hectare enterprise that now produces some 15 million stems yearly. Benev Flora is a regular supplier for Adomex, a specialist in cut and decorative greens, which offers a wide range of Hypericum under the label OrcaFloral.

From cutting to berry
At Benev Flora's farm, Hypericum, also known as St John's Wort, grows with care and attention. "It is a crop that requires patience," John Ndung'u explains. "From the cutting to a full-fledged branch with berries, it takes about 32 weeks. But the results are great: sturdy stems, lots of berries and a beautiful sheen."

After harvesting, the stems are sorted by length and quality, after which they are hydrated and cooled. They are then given the distinctive OrcaFloral packaging and transported to the Netherlands. Here, Adomex ensures that florists and wholesalers have year-round access to this popular filler.

Variety of colours
Hypericum is known for its versatility. Its berries come in all kinds of shades, from deep red and orange to soft pink, cream and even green. The special thing is that the flowers of the plant are always yellow, regardless of the final color of the berry. "The berries add a playful and dynamic element to bouquets," says Phil Kruger of Adomex. "They give just that little bit of extra volume and texture."

In the OrcaFloral range, you will find varieties such as Magical Royal Princess, Magical Green Power, Magical Triumph, Magical Snow Prince and Magical Seasons. These varieties have been selected for their long shelf life and intense color. In addition, Benev Flora also has Anigozanthos (kangaroo paws) and Lysimachia in its range.

Cooperation
The cooperation between Adomex and Benev Flora began in 2021 at the International Flower Trade Fair (IFTF) in the Netherlands. Since then, the relationship has continued to grow and Benev Flora now supplies 75% of its flowers through direct sales, with Adomex being a major buyer. "Our collaboration with Adomex has helped us to refine and expand Hypericum production," says John. "We have the same focus on quality and innovation, which makes us a strong match."

All seasons and styles
"Hypericum is a popular filler in floral arrangements, suitable for all seasons and styles. In spring it combines beautifully with tulips and hyacinths, while in summer it provides a playful accent in a bouquet with sunflowers and zinnias. In winter, Hypericum's warm hues add extra atmosphere to Christmas bouquets and festive arrangements," Phil says.

Thanks to the cooperation between Adomex and Benev Flora, florists can count on a stable supply and consistent quality. "Our commitment to sustainability, innovation and craftsmanship sets us apart in the floral world," says John. "With Hypericum, you will always have a playful and colorful accent in your floral arrangements."
