India: Pune flower market thriving as markets increase supply

The flower market at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard in Pune witnessed a surge in activity ahead of Gudi Padwa, with farmers from Pune, Solapur, and Satara districts sending large quantities of flowers for sale.

This year, farmers cultivated marigolds on a larger scale, leading to an increased supply compared to the previous year. As a result, marigold prices have dropped due to high availability, according to a report in Loksatta.

Gudi Padwa, one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, drives up demand for flowers. Anticipating better prices, farmers store high-quality flowers for the festival. Flower trader Sagar Bhosale stated that while the supply increased on Saturday, premium-quality flowers still fetched good prices.

Garlands, floral torans, and decorative flowers are in high demand during the festive season, with florists and decorators making bulk purchases. Flowers like rosebuds, chrysanthemums, asters, and marigolds are particularly popular. Last year, marigold prices ranged between ₹50-₹60 per kilogram, depending on the quality.
