“The Mandala variety is unmatched in its class”

On several farms in Kenya, the Mandala® rose variety from De Ruiter Innovations is thriving in the hands of experienced growers. Known for its pink hues, strong vase life, and consistent performance, Mandala has quickly become a favorite among international buyers—particularly in Europe and the Middle East. Two Kenyan growers, PJ Dave and Baraka Roses, share their experiences with this variety.

"We are no stranger to the Mandala variety," says Ghanshyam Dusang, General Manager. "We are one of the oldest growers of Mandala in Kenya, having started cultivation in March 2017," he shares. At an altitude of about 2,500 meters, PJ Dave's farm provides ideal growing conditions for the Mandala variety, amongst others. The high altitude contributes to a longer vase life, vibrant color, and superior bloom performance.

Dusang describes Mandala as unmatched in its class. "Its unique pink color, exceptional opening behavior, and continuous blooming in the vase sets it apart." The market response echoes its sentiments. Mandala has seen strong demand, especially in the Middle East and Europe. Currently, PJ Dave Flowers dedicates 8,000 square meters to Mandala cultivation.

Growing popularity at Baraka Roses
At Baraka Roses in Ngorika, Kenya, the story is similar. According to sales marketing manager Joram Kanyua, the decision to scale up production of Mandala came after a very successful trial. "The variety was very well received by the market, so it was an easy decision to move forward with it," he says.

"Thanks to our farm's high altitude, Mandala blooms here to reach a head size of over 5 centimeters, ideal for Baraka Roses' markets." Kanyua highlights the flower's distinctive pink-white coloration, which has made it ideal for women's events. It's not just about looks though. "Compared to other bi-pink varieties we've grown, Mandala ranks higher in terms of yield, stem length, and durability," he explains. "It's not easily bruised during handling, which is a big advantage for export."

A bright future
Like PJ Dave, Baraka Roses has also observed a clear upward trend in demand. "We believe this popularity will continue to grow. Mandala is well-positioned to become a top bi-pink variety in our portfolio." With the growing popularity of Mandala, the future for this De Ruiter variety looks as bright as its blooms.
