Breeder Assistant in Tarquinia (Italy)

Main responsibilities and duties:

Support in breeding activities

  • The Assistant Plant Breeder will work closely with the Plant Breeder to accomplish the short- and long-term breeding goals as well as actively participate in all tasks related to breeding, testing, and selection.
  • Carry out sowing, transplant, pollination and harvest of fruits from breeding lines.
  • Implement hybridization programs for several crops, also by carrying out procedures of emasculation and related cross-pollinations.
  • Support senior breeder during the phases of evaluation and selection of breeding lines.
  • Coordinate and eventually give technical instructions and information to crop workers and technicians.
  • Collect data during all the phases of crop cycle, according to targets established by senior breeder.
  • ·Coordinate and supervise process of seed extraction and disinfection.

Data Processing

  • Assign field numbers and record selected plants per each plot.
  • Support breeder in the planning of tests either with molecular markers or in vivo assays, and be able to record the related results, in order to update resistance profile of selected plants.
  • Record and update data collected throughout the season on fruits and plants and be able to perform statistical analyses.
  • Keep an inventory of seeds.
  • Periodically carry out reports, protocols and analysis procedures.

Qualifications

  • M.S or Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, Biotechnologies or related field.
  • Education or experience in plant genetics, horticulture, botany, plant pathology mandatory.
  • Good working knowledge of current DNA breeding protocols and various non-GMO technologies.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivation and creativity.
  • Must be well organized, able to communicate effectively and possess attention to detail and follow-though.
  • Ability to work under both field and greenhouse conditions.
