In the decade since New Covent Garden Flower Market first launched British Flowers Week in June 2013, the annual campaign spotlighted the British cut flower industry, raising the profile of growers, wholesalers, and creative florists working with UK-grown flowers.
Now, New Covent Garden Flower Market has decided it's time to hand the mantle of British Flowers Week on to Flowers from the Farm, the industry body promoting small-scale growers of local, seasonal British cut flowers. With a mission to increase the share of the UK market from flowers grown in this country and an engaged membership of nearly 1000 flower businesses across the UK, Flowers from the Farm is uniquely placed to lead the industry-wide campaign.
Flowers from the Farm has announced that British Flowers Week 2024 will take place from June 3 - 9, 2024, with the theme of Igniting the Passion for British cut flowers.
Founded in 2011, Flowers from the Farm is the UK industry body championing nearly 1000 independent, small-scale growers of local, seasonal cut flowers. Its members farm an estimated 1000 acres of garden-style flowers and foliage on cutting gardens, allotments, walled gardens, and farmland across the UK from Inverness to the Isles of Scilly. Flowers from the Farm has three founding aims: to promote British cut flowers, encourage more people to grow for market and to foster friendships and collaboration.
"At New Covent Garden Market, the largest and oldest wholesale flower market in the UK, our wholesalers sell. Our experienced and knowledgeable multi-generational wholesalers have been selling a huge variety of cut flowers, plants, and foliage to London and the South East for centuries. Until relatively recently – well, the 1980s anyway – the vast majority of the product sold at the market was sourced from domestic growers. Today, the majority of the flowers in the high street flower shop will have been grown by large-scale commercial growers and routed through Dutch auctions. But while the British industry may have reduced significantly in size, it produces consistent top quality, and there is still a large volume of homegrown product on the market during the season, which is always in high demand."
"We know how great the products are, and we're pretty sure you do too, but we want to look beyond that and highlight the skills and expertise of the army of incredibly talented people working in this industry. We are constantly amazed by the artistry and creativity we see every day, and we're going to bring some of them to you."
